What is a hiatal hernia?
A hiatal hernia happens when the upper stomach squeezes through the hiatus, an opening in the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes causing acid reflux or heartburn, accompanied by chest pains.
How is GERD/ Hiatal Hernia diagnosed?
Diagnosis is through:-
• Signs and symptoms
• Endoscopy - OGD
• 24hr pH monitoring
• Esophageal manometry
• Ultrasound/ CT scan
How is GERD treated?
It is treated through:
- Lifestyle/ dietary adjustments
- Medication
- Surgery i.e. Open surgery or Laparoscopic Nissen’s Fundoplication
